3 Ways to Improve Your Copywriting

So you're looking to improve your copywriting skills? Well you've come to the right place.

What I've learned as a copywriter... is you'll always have room to improve! And that's a great thing. So bravo to you for looking to improve. Let's get to it.

When I was thinking of the most effective ways I've improved my copywriting skills over the years, there are three solid pieces of advice I'd like to offer you.

And it takes us back to my first performance review after becoming a marketing specialist. Yes.. while I am an entrepreneur now, I started my career in a 9-5!

So this is how it went... my manger says to me, "Wow, your copywriting has really improved this year! I am impressed. What have you done differently?"

My answer to her question, which I didn't think about UNTIL she asked me the question, is my advice to you!

1. I read a ton!

Reading increases your vocabulary in a natural way! And if you're a good copywriter, conversational tone is typically your best friend. So you want to read books with dialogue!

I recommend picking up a book for pleasure and a book to learn. There are so many amazing books out there.

When you read a lot, you get into the rhythm of how words flow together, and you'll probably find some great inspiration for headlines and campaigns along the way! Have I mentioned that reading is a great stress reliever? It's my favorite way to wind down at the end of the day, and I hope you find the practice both pleasurable and one that will help you grow as a copywriter and entrepreneur too!

2. I write often!

Now, this is super logical... the more you write, the better a writer you'll become. When I started my career in marketing, I also journaled daily. I think this is a great practice for SO many reasons, but for the purpose of this post, it goes back to the benefit it provides in improving your writing. Just as reading the written words helps you with the flow of words, writing does the same thing.

This is of course, in addition to any copywriting projects you're already working on, but I definitely encourage you to write daily if possible. I strongly attribute a lot of my success as a copywriter to my love of writing, and I hope the same for you!

If you’re looking for a beautiful and simple journal this one is my absolute fav! It has no lines and smooth paper that’s a dream to write in. And it’s under $10. Enjoy!

3. I read out loud.

Every Single Piece of copy I write, I read out loud! I'm not kidding. You can fix tone, catch errors, and increase the conversational feel of your piece simply by reading it out load. If I'm honest with you, which I am, I'm speaking aloud as I'm writing this post ;)

And I'll re-read it again once I'm done!

Literally, these three things were total game changes for me as a copywriter.

Also, huge to effective copywriting is to write your piece to SOMEONE specific. For example, if I am writing a sales landing page and the target demographic is a 30ish year old mom with 2 kids, and she hates being away from home, and wants to start her own business. I will think of someone that I know in that position and write to them. If I don't know someone that fits into that target, I'll make a character up. I'll share more on that soon, when I share my best tips for writing copy.

Until then, I hope you will put into practice these simple and effective ways to improve your copywriting skills! Share with me in the comments which one you're looking forward to most.

If I were to pick one to start with, it would be journaling! Grab this journal and get started in a couple days. THANK YOU Amazon Prime.

Now I'm off to go re-read this post out loud before I publish it! Enjoy.
